At last count, there were 8.142 billion people on Earth, a population growing by about 64 million each year. Unfortunately, many face challenges in meeting the basic needs of a fulfilling life — food, water, personal peace and more.

In these difficult times, the work of humanitarians has become more essential than ever, yet most toil in obscurity. While they shed light in dark places, it’s all too rare that light is shined on them.

Recently, one humanitarian, Prem Rawat, received well-deserved recognition for his efforts to foster peace and well-being worldwide through The Prem Rawat Foundation and other initiatives.

The first of these honors was conferred by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University in Hyderabad, India, on Sept. 30 when Rawat received an honorary doctoral degree for his wide-ranging humanitarian work.

On Oct. 4, the International Day of Nonviolence — commemorating Mahatma Gandhi’s 156th birth anniversary — the India Association of Minnesota and the Dr. Dash Foundation presented Prem Rawat with the Vision of Gandhi Award.

Gandhi’s life was a testament to the power of truth, simplicity and peace. His leadership profoundly influenced global figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela.

The award was presented at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul, recognizing Mr. Rawat’s decades-long humanitarian contributions.

Ram Gada, honorary board member of the India Association of Minnesota, said:

“From boy prodigy and 1970s teenage icon to global peace ambassador, Prem Rawat has brought exceptional clarity, inspiration and life lessons to millions. He continues to help people from all walks of life discover their inner source of peace — something profoundly needed today.”

On behalf of Mr. Rawat, Marci Klein, development director at The Prem Rawat Foundation, accepted the award and certificate.

Many billions have come before me, and many billions will come after me.
If I want to make a difference in this world,
I need to pass on my passion for being alive,
for understanding, and for kindness.
These are the gifts I can give.
