L’oratore ospite era il \u201cricevitore\u201d dei Cleveland Browns (squadra di football americano) Paul Warfield. Non ricordo le sue parole, ma ricordo il loro impatto: mi svegliarono di colpo. Quella notte restai sveglio a scrivere, per cogliere un\u2019ondata di realizzazione dopo l\u2019altra. Per la prima volta sperimentai la vera chiarezza. E mi piacque molto. A 57 anni mi fu diagnosticato il morbo di Parkinson. Mia moglie Susan accolse la notizia col suo tipico spirito: \u201cNon preoccuparti caro, ti amo lo stesso. E se diventer\u00e0 molto grave, ti preparer\u00f2 il Martini da sorseggiare in una tazza.\u201d Risi, e 15 anni dopo le mie condizioni erano migliorate. Il neurologo mi disse persino che non poteva pi\u00f9 fare una diagnosi di Parkinson. La diagnosi stessa era stata pi\u00f9 spaventosa che il convivere con la malattia. Una sfida ancora pi\u00f9 grande arriv\u00f2 quattro anni dopo, quando Susan perse la sua breve battaglia contro il cancro. Aveva praticato la Conoscenza per pi\u00f9 di 20 anni, e quando esal\u00f2 l\u2019ultimo respiro, un sorriso radioso si diffuse sul suo viso. In quel momento pensai: \u201cSo dove stai andando, \u00e8 un posto che visito spesso. Ci vediamo l\u00e0, amore mio.\u201d<\/p>\n Il mio mondo fu sconvolto da quella perdita, eppure ero profondamente grato di essere radicato in qualcosa che non viene toccato dalla morte: l\u2019energia stessa della vita. Prima di morire, Susan mi fece promettere di andare agli eventi di Prem a Toronto e a Los Angeles. Lo feci ed essi mi aiutarono ad affrontare del tutto il lutto, ma anche a tenere cari i 30 anni condivisi con una donna straordinaria, cosa di cui sar\u00f2 per sempre grato.
